Fun, free activities in South Devon
May Bank Holidays are around the corner and May half-term coming up too, making it the perfect time of year to have a short break at our holiday homes in Shaldon.
We know holidays can be expensive too, so here are a few free – and fun – activities you can do around Shaldon and across South Devon that are perfect for a stress free day out in the warm spring weather.
Have a sandcastle building competition on Teignmouth beach! Every year the Teignmouth Regatta in August has a sandcastle building competition, but you can have one yourself just for the family!
Add some excitement to your walk by going geocaching in the countryside. Like a big treasure hunt, you use GPS to hide and seek containers, and you can help others who are out geocaching too!
Be a bit daring and try wild swimming. The warm summer will warm up the water, so a dip in a river, lake or even a waterfall will be perfect for cooling off after a day exploring the countryside.
See the stunning views of South Devon out to sea, by walking along the South West Coast Path. The path stretches all the way around the South West, and South Devon has some of the best views on offer.
If you’re having a day on the beach, try rock pooling. The kids will enjoy spotting starfish, seaweed and crabs in the rock pools, but make sure you put the creatures back where they came from.
Take a trip to the wilds of Dartmoor. There is a lot to see there, from the Zoological Park, and you might even spot some of the famous Dartmoor ponies.
Journey to Dawlish, where you can spot passing steam trains from the beach and some birds and woodland animals at the Dawlish Warren Nature and Wildlife Reserve.
Remember to bring your camera and take lots of pictures when on your holiday, so you can look back to the brilliant time you had in South Devon.
