Fish Quay opens in Teignmouth
A £1.1 million Fish Quay has opened in Teignmouth, South Devon, that was built to help boost fishing, leisure and tourism industries in Teignmouth and surrounding areas. Close to our Devon holiday cottages, the quay will be the great place for recreational fishing.
The regeneration scheme aims to boost the livelihoods of the local South Devon fishermen, help retain the fishing heritage of the area and encourage visitors with new facilities and boats.
The wooden jetty has been replaced with a new pontoon, as well new equipment for fishermen to process their catches. There has also been an improvement in landing facilities for better handling and turnaround of boats, as well as better access for vehicles moving the catches to market.
The improvements also mean that charter vessels have access to Teignmouth so people can come to town by boat can enjoy the beaches shops and other tourist attractions Teignmouth has to offer.
Teignbridge District Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Phil Shears said: “This is another example of Teignbridge delivering big on projects that support and strengthen the local economy.”
The development of Fish Quay has come after other successful schemes across the Teignmouth area and South Devon. This scheme was funded by Devon District Council, European Fisheries Fund and the Teignbridge Council.
Paul Barczok, from the Teign Fishermen and Waterman’s CIC said: “The fishing community are delighted to see the new quay which will create real benefits for both the local industry and the wider community and may even encourage the next generation of boats from neighbouring areas to fish from Teignmouth.”
Fishing is just one of many great activities to get involved with and try out when staying at our Devon holiday cottages, with windsurfing, body boarding and wild swimming to do too.
